Enjoying a charmed location in the Gulf of Mexico, South Padre Island is an idyllic barrier island off the coast of Texas. Sun hungry vacationers flock to this razor thin slice of paradise every year to laze on the picture-perfect beaches or enjoy the dozens of opportunities to get out on the azure water.
Come March, South Padre kicks it into high gear for that time honored American college tradition: the legendary Spring Break. The island transforms into Spring Break island, as thousands of energetic college students come from far and wide to blow off some steam and party into the night. Far from SPI’s only huge festival, it’s also home to Splash South Padre, Texas’ biggest LGBTQ celebration, two international fishing tournaments as well as the family friendly South Padre Sandcastle Days. If that wasn’t enough, the sky comes alive from Memorial Day until Labor Day for fireworks shows every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
If you happen to visit when there are no events taking place, you’ll still find plenty to keep you occupied. Relax on the white sandy beaches and soak up the sun or cool off at the thrilling Schlitterbahn Waterpark? Get up and close to sea critters at South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center or rent a kayak and explore the coastline at your own pace? The opportunities are limitless, and you’ll be sure to have a cold drink and a great meal waiting at one of the island’s many restaurants and bars.
